Since 2015, we’ve been farming and growing coconuts on Batiki in a way that improves the health of the land and stores higher amounts of carbon in the soil. Why is this important?
Capturing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as soil carbon has been proven as one way to slow the effects of global warming — forming an essential part of solving climate change.
Through regenerative farming practices such as growing different kinds of plants together and not burning and removing trees over six years, our four villages on Batiki Island have been able to store tonnes of carbon in the soil.
This fits within our overall philosophy of “Bula”, which means both “life” and “health” in our language. We care about the health of our island, its surrounding waters and the 300 women, men and children who call Batiki home.
In our culture; people, land and ocean are all interconnected and not bound by time. That’s why taking good care of our soil brings benefits all around.
