Bula Batiki is a cooperatively owned business, and to our knowledge we are the only cooperatively owned surfboard wax company in the world. It has 26 member owners, 38 staff and 55 suppliers of coconuts.

Our home Batiki is literally at the heart of the Fiji group of islands. It is in the Lomaiviti Group, and about 5 hours from the capital, Suva, by boat.

All the families on Batiki are involved in the company in one way or another — whether as owners, employees or suppliers of coconuts. Bula Batiki will soon be extending its community reach to beyond Batiki, working with a Fijian business development company, Matanataki Pte Ltd, to help us source beeswax from bee keeping communities located near Fiji’s Great Sea Reef.

Currently Bula Batiki products are sold from Fiji, but we are setting up distribution channels in Japan and Australia, which we expect to have operational in late 2023. Watch this space. Contact us via [email protected] for more details!

We use 100% virgin coconut oil, which is prepared using a fermentation method; and beeswax, a byproduct from the product of honey by Fijian beekeeping communities.

So you want to wax up your surfboard? Here’s how our surfing friends tell us they do it:

Put your surfboard in the sun, but not for too long — just enough for the wax to start melting. If the sun isn’t out then use a wax comb to remove the wax and clean the remaining wax residue off with a wax remover and cloth.

Apply the wax (tropical / base first) using a cross-hatching technique (i.e. in angular stripes in one direction from the top of the board to the bottom, and then in angular stripes in a “cross” pattern the opposite direction) until you get small bumps.

If you’re not in tropical waters like ours, then you need to choose the right top coat wax for the water temperature you’re surfing in. Your top coat doesn’t need to be as thick as the base layer — you’ll only need 1–2 layers.

It can last for a while. It’s good to clean your board and do a fresh coat of Board Butter every couple of months.

Board Butter is good for all epoxy and polyurethane (fibreglass) boards. You won’t need to use our Board Butter on soft or “foamy” boards.
